To celebrate the UK launch of her new coffee table book, Inspired, SportStylist speaks to Lorna Jane Clarkson, founder of popular activewear brand, Lorna Jane, to find out what inspires her in all things fitness, food, life and career.
Do you think regular fitness has a positive ripple effect on other areas of our lives?
Absolutely, and my Active Living Philosophy is built around that exact thought process.
I honestly believe that I wouldn’t be as successful in my business and in my life if I didn’t make my health and fitness a priority. I move my body every day (no exception), nourish with real, healthy foods and believe in myself and my ability to do anything I’m willing to work for.
When you live an active life, it definitely affects all other areas of your life – you are happier, have more energy and have better mental clarity to dream BIG and achieve great things.
Have you always been interested in fitness?
I was never really a fitness fanatic until the aerobics craze started in the late 80’s. I just loved the energy of aerobics, and how it made fitness fun! I started designing activewear because I wanted to make women feel differently about their workouts -maybe even look forward to them and that is what the thought process is around Active Living. Find things that you love to do, wear great activewear to inspire you – and you will workout more often because it’s fun.
What is your favourite recipe that we should try first from the new book?
Inspired has 25+ beautiful recipes that are my absolute favourites right now. The fish burrito bowl (pg 78) is on high rotation in our house because it’s so delicious and packed with heaps of vibrant vegies, complex carbohydrates and good fats to keep you feeling full and satisfied for longer. This recipe is great when entertaining as you can set out all the ingredients and guests can literally build and customize their own bowl!
I am also a self confessed chocolate addict so one of my other fav recipes is homemade chocolate without the dairy or refined sugar – you can find this recipe in Inspired (pg 167) as well!
Have you always had an interest in nutrition and do you enjoy cooking yourself?
I have always been passionate about good food, but it’s really been in the past 10 years that I have become interested in the makeup of food and how we need to balance our plates to nourish our bodies. From a young age, my mother taught me to nourish my body with real food, but it wasn’t until my early twenties when I started baking cakes and slices for a local heath food café that my interest in cooking really began. Whether it’s macro’s vs. calories, why chocolate is good for you or the latest superfood, I love sharing everything I learn with my family, friends and customers.
How did the simple notion of ‘belief’ help you in your business and grow it into an international brand?
At Lorna Jane we say ‘It starts with believe’ and believe is one of the most important pillars in my Active Living philosophy. For me, believing in myself changed my life. If I hadn’t believed that I could change women’s lives with amazing active wear then it would never have happened! Having a strong belief system and surrounding yourself with others that believe in your dream is imperative to success both in life and in business.
No matter where you want to go or what you want to do in life, the best thing you can do is believe in yourself and your goals and those big, bright dreams will start to come true!
What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking the leap into a new business/ career move/ life venture but still has doubts in their own ability?
There’s no better time to start than right NOW. I am a huge advocate for having dreams and making plans but no amount of planning will get you where you want to be if you sit and wait for opportunity to find you. I want to encourage women to put their fears aside and follow their dreams, because you never know just how amazing your life can be until you take that great big leap of faith and START NOW!
