I have always been involved in sports, right from my first swimming experience as a baby right up to competing with wakeboarding at an international level (and some county golf and lacrosse in-between somewhere – along with the annual snowboard trips – it’s a wonder I got a degree!)
I was very active during my first pregnancy, I continued to wakeboard, worked with a personal trainer and near the end I continued with yoga and lots of walking. This pregnancy has been the total opposite where I was forced to stop most forms of working out (which has driven me crazy). I managed to swim for a chunk of it but the one constant has been the pregnancy yoga, which I’ve managed to continue throughout the pregnancy.
It’s great to keep as active as possible during your pregnancy as it gears you up for the harder part; the birth of your newbie. If you want to continue working out, doctors/midwives usually advise that if you’re already into a sport or working out, then continuing it is not usually a problem, but just be sure to listen to your body, it’ll tell you when to slow things down. If you’ve never done any sport and want to keep fit during your pregnancy, make sure you speak to your doctor first before embarking on a new activity.
I recently got sent some lovely pregnancy workout gear from FittaMamma who are a brand that specialise in making their items as comfortable and supportive as possible. The clothing is designed for activities but its actually so comfortable and so supportive that its become a staple in my pregnancy wardrobe!
The first time I wore the gear was when I did the shoot a couple of weeks ago. I wore it for about five hours and I didn’t even notice it. My bump was all snug and supported throughout the shoot and I incredibly comfortable at all times. The leggings fit nicely around your hips with a maternity panel that comes up over your bump to keep it supported. Then the top has a built in sports bra to keep those pregnant boobs under control and also a stretchy front to hold your growing bump. The perfect combo!
