We catch up with the style coaches and creators from Style My – an international stylist training council. Elin and Tanja are big advocates for healthy lifestyles and finding the balance between work and life.
Elin: My journey into sport started at a young age and throughout high school I was part of every team and even planned to study sport science at Loughborough. When I was 16 I injured myself in gymnastics therefore couldn’t continue with sport as much as I had done in the past.
I did carry on training throughout my twenties and used to run religiously for a minimum of 5 miles a day for a long time. I used to do a lot of interval training and at my peak could run 10k in sub 42 minutes. Those days are long gone though!
As age and work have taken over fitness took a back seat in my early thirties and it’s only now that I’ve started running again. I have to admit that for three years I fell out of love with training all together. As a stylist for Style Doctors (a company I started back in 2004) I would regularly walk between 4-12 miles per day on personal styling sessions and would then also try to run in the evening. This took its toll and I would often become ill due to over-training.
As a lacto-vegetarian it was difficult for me to get the required protein needed to sustain such an active lifestyle however after cutting back on the extreme exercise I now feel much healthier. My favourite meals are avocado toast which I have on rye bread and top with spinach, feta and a seed mix. I’m a big fan of stir fry’s too and load up on greens, tofu and pulses. Eggs are the one thing I’d love to be able to eat however I just can’t seem to like anything egg based I’ve tried so far. Any suggestions would be more than welcome!
I am now trying to make time to get to the gym three times a week for around 50 minutes where I do a mixture of cardio work (back to running) and a circuit using kettlebells. It’s early days in the re-introduction to training however I’m enjoying it and that’s what’s important to me at this stage rather than beating my previous times. I have realised that I am unlikely to be back to the level of fitness I was once at and my goal now is continue without having year long gaps without training.
Having started another company Style My in 2015 my workload is unlikely to ever stop and the nature of my work as a stylist and coach will always mean that I’m active. I am trying to think about exercise as a way to strengthen my body and keep my mind alert as I approach my mid-thirties.
As a stylist I’m a big advocate of ‘if you look good, you feel good’ and that also applies to having the correct training clothes that makes you feel good. I’d never turn up to the gym in an old shapeless t shirt! I invest in training clothes that make me ‘feel the part’ and that goes a long way to helping me feel motivated. Nike are my running shoes of choice and I like to have something that’s a bright colour! I love the developments in sportswear over the past few years and could easily buy something new every week!

Tanja I have always been interested in healthy food, my mum has introduced me from an early age to yoga, pilates and growing up we went through spurts of vegan lifestyle. Needless to say I have always been active but not in a traditional sports or gym sense, I always prefered a more alternative route.
All of this was turned on it’s head when I had Noa, I gained 20kg and it has taken me over a year to get back to a more balanced self. Being a new mum and trying to balance work and life is constant challenge, so after many self attempts I decided to get a professional and Amy from A Body Forever trained me mentally and physically to take control of my body and eating habits. I strongly believe that if you are finding it hard to do something, enlist a expert. Having styled thousands of clients through my consultancy id couture and being a Creative Director for SportStylist, I can see the power of transformations and it was so wonderful to have the same experience myself.
There are so many fantastic online and social fitspiration and healthy recipe blogs that we are really spoilt for choice. I love searching for new ideas on how to get fit and how to prepare meals for myself and my family. One of the things that my personal trainer Amy told me is to keep it simple and the best exercises are the ones you can do at home, don’t underestimate the power of a good plank!
When it comes to fitness wear I love to style it both for getting fit and mixing it into my day to day, I believe everyone needs a good pair of stylish trainers especially in London, there are so many beautiful parks and routes to and from the tube that you can turn any journey into a mini training session. My favourite trainers at the moment are adidas Originals Stan Smith – perfect for summer!
