Wildcat Fitness personal trainer LJ puts PurEssentiel to the test.
I am constantly in awe of what my body can do and how I can continue, week after week, to push it to new limits in my training. However, with training hard comes inevitable aches and pains – a familiar feeling to anyone serious about their fitness. So when PurEssentiel asked me to try its new range of Aromatherapy Muscle and Joint treatments I jumped at the chance (and then cursed my aching knees….!)
I trialled three products from their all natural essential oil range – the Muscles and Joints Soothing Balm, the Muscles and Joints Roller and the Muscles and Joints Heating Patches. All the products were extremely easy to fit into my gym bag and the Roller and Soothing Balm very quickly became pre and post workout essentials for me!
The roller made it easy to massage the beautiful botanical blend of oils into my skin before I taught my first Body Pump class of the week. I used it on my shoulders, quads and calves before my weight lifting class to help keep my joints flexible and my muscles free from tension, and the mix of oils including eucalyptus, peppermint, rosemary and lavender smelled fantastic, as well as making my muscles feel a lot more fluid prior to a tough one hour workout. Often these type of muscle-sassing products have a very strong and sometimes even unpleasant smell, but the aroma in itself of the PurEssentiel roller was enough to relax and uplift me before training.
The next morning I was lucky enough to be invited to take part in a sunrise rooftop yoga event, and I thought after a relaxing full body stretch the perfect thing to use would be the PurEssentiel Soothing Balm, to help maximise the restorative effects of the yoga on my body.
The balm was so easy to apply to my neck, shoulders, calves and ankles and was absorbed quickly thanks to the mix of shea butter, beeswax and sunflower oil. It melted into my skin and felt cooling as it did – probably because of the camphor and menthol in the balm. Again, the fresh and natural smell was one of the best parts of the product and the cooling, calming effects of the balm added to the relaxed, energised feel of my body after an uplifting early morning full body flow.
As the week progressed and my teaching and personal workouts increased, the PurEssentiel products became more and more a part of my routine and permanent fixture in my backpack. The combination of the roller before and balm after training were really helping to both prepare my body for a workout, and help me relax and combat DOMS afterwards.
The roller especially was not only quick and easy to use, but really convenient too as the product was not only dispensed straight onto my skin, but massaged in using the built-in roller ball. Later in the week as I started to teach my Body Attack classes and add in more HIIT style workouts my calves were starting to get tight and tired, so the PurEssentiel roller was perfect to even incorporate into my post workout cool down, as shown here straight after my Friday lunchtime class in Kensington (the sweaty selfie gives you an idea of how hard I worked and therefore deserved this natural, pure and active essential oil blend!)
After a particularly heavy upper body session on Saturday morning I could feel tightness creeping into my neck and shoulders, so when I got him I decided to use one of the PurEssentiel Heating Patches. I was able to cut the patch to fit the area at the base of my neck that was particularly tight, and because the fabric of the patches was so thin and stretchy it moulded to my body and stayed put for several hours, giving me constant muscular relief, as well as generating heat thanks to the capsicum oil in the patches.
Other than feeling far more relaxed, I barely noticed I was wearing the patch, it didn’t feel restrictive in any way, nor did it hurt when I removed it (my first thought when I put it on was how much was it going to pull when it had to come off!) but it did relieve the tightness I had felt when I first applied the patch. I can’t wait to try them on my knees after a run – they’d be light enough to wear under my favourite leggings with no problem.
PurEssentiel is the leading non-drug muscular and joint pain relief range in France and having used and loved the products over the course of a week I can see why. They’re going to be staying in my gym bag for a long time to come – much to the literal relief of my muscles!
