The team here at SportStylist was really excited when British cycling clothing brand, Rapha, announced that it would be sponsoring the women’s team Canyon//SRAM. This recognition of women’s cycling is very encouraging and they have chosen a brilliant team of female athletes to support. One of these talented women is British rider, Hannah Barnes who was recently interviewed by cycling insurers, Bikmo on a topic I think we can all relate to – how to maintain motivation during your cycling training.

Winter Cycling Motivation Tips From Hannah Barnes
1. Have a goal
If you don’t have a goal right now, think about what that goal could be. Whether it’s setting a certain distance to ride, competing in a race or sportive, a climb you’d like to conquer or maybe a weight you’d like to achieve. I think I speak for most cyclists when I say everyone has a reason why they ride, and having that goal in mind will inspire you to get riding in the moments you might feel slightly sluggish.
2. Ride with friends
Just as it was when we were kids, doing things with friends is always so much more fun than doing it alone. Just like I do with teammates or friends, heading out for a long stint won’t feel as gruelling, or as long either for that matter if you do some with pals. If none of your friends ride, it’s easy enough to find someone who does.
You can join a local bike club or visit your local bike shop and enquire about group rides in the area. Once you’re part of a cycling network, you’ll find plenty of like-minded people to ride with.

3. Shout about it
If you’ve got a ride, race or sportive planned, shout about it from the rooftops, as the more people who are aware of your commitment, the harder it will be to back out. Also, the more times you make such a statement, the more of a creature of you’ll become in making and smashing your cycling goals.
4. Do morning workouts
This may mean leaving the comfort and warmth of your bed in the early mornings which I can completely appreciate is anything but easy. Even if you are a morning person, it’s not easy to spring out of bed in the morning, however, there are tricks you can pull out to get your ride in. Place your cycling kit within clear sight so it’s one of the first things you see in the morning. Also, prepare your bidon in the fridge so you’re all set to go once your kit is on.
Riding in the morning will not only fill you with energy for the day, but you’ll feel a great sense of achievement at what you’ve already done before most have even reached for the snooze button.
5. Get a coach
Although I love to ride, it does help when you have a second voice telling you it’s time to get out and put the structured training regime to practice. A professional coach has the ability to tailor a plan specifically to your fitness level, and will help you to achieve the end goal. Also, the last thing you want is to give a negative report back to your coach if you haven’t kept your focus or done the required training. I’m lucky that a lot of my training is done with my team mates or alone, but I do have coach who helps me achieve my peak targets.
