Ida is a professional dancer, actress, choreographer, yoga and fitness instructor and Sweaty Betty ambassador who admits she simply could not last a day without moving. It all started as a child growing up in Finland, running around in forests, crosscountry skiing to school and back, attending the Liisa Nojonen Dance School every day after her lessons and climbing the trees with her brothers. Her philosophy on life is to “turn up the volume and play it LOUD! Get your abs shaking, feet moving and go for it!” Already mesmerised by her energy, we wated to know even more and get her thoughts on dance, yoga, fitness and sport-style.
What’s it like working on a music video as a dancer?
Every shoot is different. For some of the videos we will have a rehearsal day with a choreographer and then move into studio the next day to shoot it like we did with Scissor Sisters – Any Which Wayz which was shot at Black Island Studios. Jessie J’s Laserlight was very different to that, shot in a club in Brixton, Rizzle Kicks we rehearsed on the day and shot outdoors. Music video shoots are always long days and make-up, hair and costume always takes time as well as changing camera lenses, sets and lights takes time and that’s when the dancers get breaks.
How does that compare with your experience on X-Factor?
X-Factor was different as it has so many artists and a huge crew and production team behind it. Similarily we started early, had rehearsals on the day, then into hair and makeup, costume fitting and tech-rehearsals and then it was the LIVE show time! You only get one go when you’re performing and that’s it. No numerous shots and takes from different angles like in music videos and a lot more people running around. And you also have the live audience! That said, I love the variety that you get with working on set, whether it’s TV, film, video, live stage. You can never get bored. Every music video you do, you almost step into different world. Magic.
What kit do you like to wear for your dance training?
For dance training I wear same stuff I wear to fitness and yoga classes, maybe a looser top or bottom depending on the job. Actually I do feel I live in my active wear, whether dancing, doing fitness or yoga or just going out for coffee or cocktail!! Mixing up fitness gear with some designer stuff is the best. It feels good and looks easy but stylish.
You teach yoga and run retreats in Morocco, too. What’s your favourite part of an overseas retreat?
Yes I run retreats and workshops overseas. Its always exciting to get to a new place. Breaking off from your daily routines and surroundings opens your body and mind in a different way. You also get to spend 5-10 days with the same people and train with them, that way getting deeper with training and focus on certain areas so you can give more detailed and personal instructons. And I love travelling, seeing new places, new traditions, food and learning tricks is always cool. Yesterday I stepped on a surfboard first time in my life and cant wait to get back on it tomorrow!
What yoga kit do you take with you for a retreat?
Of course I take my Sweaty Betty gear with me! One of my favourites from the new Tomboy Tribe Collection is definitely ‘Take it to the matt’ Yoga vest. It’s so light, comfy and I love the little detail on the back! Here’s hoping I will get a nice tan so the white will look even better!
You teach Reshape and Ride at 1Rebel. How does it make you feel teaching an intense class like that?
High intensitity fitness classes at Rebel are a euphoric experience! I love that rush of adrenaline in the studio and being able to push harder and keep going further. What happens in the studio you take with you and trust me it will transform your life outside the studio too. Feel good, feel great – inside and out – strong and full of power. I love inspiring women to get into fitness and to encourage them to get ready to be the rockstar of your life!
What make you decide to become an ambassador for Sweaty Betty?
When Sweaty Betty opened up their store in Shoreditch I knew I had to get in. I taught classes and workshops for them and liked the vibe and loved the clothes. Perfect match.
What are your Top Three favourite pieces from the ‘Tomboy’ collection?
