Even standing on a court opposite the formidable Serena Williams must be a pretty terrifying experience but Heather Watson has just played her best match yet. After such an incredible performance from the young player, we see a very bright future ahead. We spoke to BBC commentator and former British Number One Anne Keothavong just before the match about Heather’s playing style and how she can play to her strengths. “Heather’s movement around the court is exceptional,” says Anne. “She will need to go all out with this skill against Serena, who can also is also very light on her feet.”
#2 – The Serve
“Serena is very aggressive on the court and tends to stand forward to attack the first service. Heather will need to have a strong first serve to give Serena fewer chances to break her serve.”
#3 – Be Brave
“Heather is a great player but Serena is known to be intimidating on court. Heather is going to need to show a lot of bravery and really prove that she is a match for Serena, and isn’t going to bow out quietly!”

#1 – Track the ball early
Keep your eye on the ball at all times so you can get into position ready for the return.
#2 – Be explosive
Explosive power is so important when you need to react quickly or change direction at speed. Work on single leg explosiveness, intervals and low-repetition, high-weight resistance training to improve your power.
#3 – Strengthen your glutes and legs
It goes without saying that to move around a court like these women, you’ll need strong glutes and legs. Start working on your squats, deadlifts and leg press, ladies!
#4 – Read the game
Get to know your opponent and understand their playing style so you can play to your strengths in the best way to win the match.
