We’ve collaborated with gym equipment providers, GymCompany to celebrate the rise of the spin bike and get insight from expert Hilary Gilbert into why indoor cycling is still one of the most effective ways to improve your mental and physical fitness.
Hilary Gilbert is the co-founder of the fantastic Boom Cycle Studios in London who help boost the moods and fitness of their clients with an energetic music fuelled workout out on a Schwinn Performance Bike. We asked her to give us a deeper explanation of the benefits of getting on a spin bike for both mind and body.
“Spinning is based on HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) which, includes fat burning and seriously increased cardio vascular strength, both of which are achieved at a very efficient rate when done properly. Also, metabolism becomes faster over time.
As important, though, are the psychological benefits of spinning. There are three main mental benefits I feel every time I do a BOOM Cycle ride: escapism-like meditation, clearing of the mind and of course the endorphin rush.
“When I ride, I switch off my normal environment and any stresses that come with it. For me it’s almost like meditation. I come out more calm about anything that was bugging me before I started the class.
The carefully selected music in the classes that we run at BOOM Cycle and motivational coaching allow my mind to idle and clear and I often solve problems and sub-consciously think through things when I’m riding, more often than not coming out of the room with a solution or two.”
Being on the right bike is also important according to GymCompany and the Schwinn Performance Bike is a really sophisticated piece of equipment ensuring comfort and adjustable positioning in the seat post and handlebars. You know that as soon as you sit on that saddle and clip into the bike (if wearing cycling shoes) you’re in for a great workout.
Did you know that in 1995 Schwinn released the first production bike that was designed for group indoor cycling? Since then, what we know as ‘spinning’ has absolutely taken off and lots of us will still jump on a Schwinn bike saddle at home and in studios all over the world.
