Before you do any exercise or play a sport, it is really important to spend a few minutes warming up your body. This is true for any physical exercise, be it circuit training, weight lifting, running, tennis or swimming.
In the past most of the focus was placed on static stretching, particularly of the legs, but now dynamic stretching has become the standard warm up practice. This type of stretching involves a lot more of the body, and the movements mirror those that you will be practising during your main exercise.
You want to feel your pulse raising slightly, and if you develop a little sweat on your brow at the end then you’re definitely doing it right!
Warm Up Tips – YouTube Videos
Whatever exercise you practice, you are sure to find a video on YouTube with a recommended warm up sequence. Here are a couple of my favourites that are great to do before hitting the gym, running or doing body-weight training:
If you would like some inspiration on what to do to warm up for tennis, then take a look at the YouTube video below that I recently published. It was inspired by Brad Gilbert’s book “Winning Ugly” and includes a quick 5 minute sequence of dynamic and static stretches that can easily be done before a match.
Warm Up Tops
As the weather is pretty cold at the moment, it is a good idea to wear some warm clothes whilst you are warming up your muscles. In my video I am sporting New Balance’s InTransit Hoodie, which has a relaxed fit and comes in some great colours. Although I tend to use it to warm up for tennis, I have also used it for an evening run and it kept me warm and dry.
Another jacket I would love to wear both on the tennis court and when running would be Monreal London’s Hooded Stretch Jersey Jacket.
Whilst for yoga and Pilates, I’ve got my eye on the Sweaty Betty Medina Drape Back top, which is great for showing off those pretty sports bras.
